Ⅰ. How To improve our English reading skills?
prehension passages are usually of two types: exposition and narration. An exposition is writing which explains something; a narration is writing which tells a story. They are to be handled differently.
When you take up a prehension passage, the first thing is to tell whether the passage is an exposition or a narration.

For an exposition type passage, the method is to read the first sentence of each para-graph carefully and skip the rest of the paragraph. You’ll then find some of the questions following the passage which can already be answered. For questions you don’t have enough information to find the right answer, you’ll use a second method. This is to find a key word in the question itself, and then scan the passage to locate the key word. Read the sentence where the key word is, and then the answer is ready.

For a narration type passage, the method is to read the passage from the beginning and sentence by sentence. When you get an idea of what the story is about, it’s time to stop reading. Usually this happens when you’ve read one third of the passage. Try to answer the questions, and you’ll find you can answer some of them. When e across a question you don’t have enough information to answer, go back to the passage and resume your reading from the point where you stopped. Go on with your reading until you have the answer to the question.

Following these methods, you’ll be able to finish answering the questions in much less time than is allowed, and the chances of finding the right answer is greater than you go through the whole passage.
The key to ess in prehension tests is thus DO NOT READ THE PASSAGE SENTENCE BY SENTENCE. It’s possible to answer all the questions correctly without having to read more than one third of the passage.
