14、(An excerpt of After Twenty Years)
There was now a cold rain falling and the wind was stronger. The few people walking along that street were hurrying, trying to keep warm. At the door of the shop stood the man who had come a thousand miles to meet a friend, Jimmy Wells. Twenty years ago, they agreed to meet here tonight. Such a meeting could not be certain. But he waited.
About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long coat came hurrying across the street. He went directly to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” he asked, doubtfully.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” cried Bob.
The new man took Bob’s hands in his. “It’s Bob! It surely is. I was certain I would find you here if you were still alive. Twenty years is a long time. The old restaurant is gone, Bob. I wish it were here, so that we could have another dinner in it. Has the West been good to you?”
“It gave me everything I asked for. You’ve changed, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall.”
“Oh, I grew a little after I was twenty.”
“Are you doing well in New York, Jimmy?”
“Well enough. I work for the city. Come on, Bob. We’ll go to a place I know, and have a good long talk about old times.”
The two men started along the street, arm in arm. Bob, the man from the West, was beginning to tell the story of his life. The other, with his coat up to his ears, listened with interest.
At the corner stood a shop bright with electric lights. When they came near, each turned to look at the other’s face.
The man from the West stopped suddenly and pulled his arm away. “You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the shape of a man’s nose.”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest for ten minutes, Bob. Chicago policemen thought you might be coming to New York. 15、Have you ever heard of the proverb(格言) “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise?” It was written by Benjamin Franklin. Another famous proverb is “ A penny saved is a penny earned”, which means money should not be wasted. People like to use proverbs because they usually have deep meanings. Here is an interesting collection of proverbs about love.
Some people say “Absence makes the heart grow fonder(多情的)”. That means you love someone even more when he or she is far away.
Another proverb says “love is blind”. In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about the person.
Here is another popular saying about love: “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Some people believe that a woman can win a man’s love if she cooks his favorite foods. Some people only want to love someone who is very good-looking. You might tell them that “Beauty is only skin deep.” What a person looks like is not really important.
All in all, those proverbs are quite interesting sometimes. If you try to memorize some of them in your English study, you may find a lot of fun when talking in English. So, please have a try. “Action speaks louder than words.”

16、“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus(关注)on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is useful in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many
