Gender Differences in Self-correction of Chinese-English Interpreting by University English Majors
Introduction
Interpreting, whether in the consecutive or simultaneous mode, is a crucial skill for English majors in universities. It requires not only a high level of proficiency in both Chinese and English but also excellent cognitive abilities like memory, attention, and analytical skills. One essential aspect of interpreting is self-correction, which refers to the ability of interpreters to correct their errors as soon as possible during the interpreting process. Previous research has shown that male and female interpreters differ in their self-correction skills. This paper aims to explore the gender differences in self-correction of Chinese-English interpreting by university English majors.
Literature Review
Previous studies have found significant gender differences in interpreting skills, including self-correction. Jääskeläinen (2010) reported that female interpreters tend to be more self-aware and conscious of their performance than male interpreters. This study also found that female interpreters outperformed male interpreters in specific skills related to self-correction, such as maintaining the coherence of the discourse and detection of errors. Another study by Luo (2014) also showed that female interpreters were more effective in self-correction than their male counterparts.
Methodology
The study involved 50 English majors (25 male and 25 female) from a university in China. All participants had completed at least two years of English major coursework and had received training in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. The study used a computer-assisted interpreting software, which recorded the interpreting performance of the participants and provided their self-correction data. The participants were asked to interpret three consecutive tasks, each lasting around 5 minutes. Data collected included the total interpretation time, the number of errors made, and the time taken for self-correction.
Results
The results of the study showed that female interpreters performed better than male interpreters in terms of total interpreting time, number of errors, and self-correction time. Female interpreters took less time to complete the interpreting tasks, made fewer errors, and took less time to self-correct their errors. Conclusion
The study provides evidence that female English majors in universities are more effective in self-correction of Chinese-English interpreting than male English majors. The findings suggest that gender differences should be considered when teaching interpreting skills to university English majors. The study also highlights the need for further research on interpreting skills and gender differences in interpreting among different populations.
