第一景:威尼斯一街道上
依阿高:啊!先生,你放心;我跟他,另有我的打算;我们不能都做主人,做主人的也不都是令人效忠的。你看多少屈膝尽职的仆人,甘心为人奴役,消耗了一生,像是主人的驴子一般,只赢的一把草料,等到老时,被开革了;这样的忠仆该用鞭子抽!此外还有一种人,装出尽职的样子,但是一心一意的顾虑着自己的利益,只对主人们作出服务的神气,靠他们得利,当他们的衣囊肥满的时候便为他们自己而服务了;这样的人是有心计的;老实说我就是这样的一个。因为,先生,像你确是洛德里高一般,我若有那摩尔人的地位,我以为却不是如今的依阿高了;我跟他,我正是跟着我自己哩。

依阿高:我们变成这样,或那样,这全在我们自己。我们的身体好比是花园,我们的意志便是园丁了;所以我们若是要种荨麻,或是栽莴苣,植薄荷,艺茴香,满园繁殖一种香草,或是各色杂陈,园地
