You can't imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, 1 was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn*t do either well. He later informed me that I was n not athletic'1.
The idea that I was ” not athleticn stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line , my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted !
At mile 3,1 passed a sign: GO FOR IT, RUNNERS !”
By mile 17,1 became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,1 was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 . or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also ( and am still) a high school track and field coach(田径 教练).One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece , and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him for whatever interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. Iwent to him asking, John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it. "John answered J Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason. H
From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple nI trust that you can do it!” can go along way!

Teenagers* fitness is now a major concern, to which physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: n First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier. n
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. '* Overweight'1 means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. n Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously Active" refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but are not at a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez , overweight teenagers should keep active to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories. n Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty each day. n Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,n said Dr. Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise(强化训练), together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities, which are really important in order to prevent injuries. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person's strength.
