Two scientists, Germany's Benjamin List and Scotland-born David MacMillan, have won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 56 (develop) a molecule-building(分子建构)tool that can produce many important
compounds in a "greener" way.
The process of making molecules 57 (require) the linking of individual atoms together in specific positions. This can be very slow and difficult. For many years, chemists only used either complex enzymes(酶)
58 metal catalysts(催化剂|).
That all changed in 2000, when List and MacMillan 59 (independence) reported that small organic molecules can be used to do the same job.
The process has made the production of some drugs much 60 (easy). It noted that an 61 (estimate) 35 percent of the world's total GDP, in some way involves chemical catalysis.
Speaking after the 62 (announce), List said the award came as a "huge surprise^^. He said at the beginning he did not know that MacMillan was working on the same subject, and he thought his effort might turn out to be, what he called. 63 "stupid idea”.
MacMillan said the start of his catalysis work was a pretty simple idea 64 really sparked a lot of different research. He added, "The part we're just so proud of is that you don't have to have huge amounts of equipment and money 65(do) fine things in chemistry.^^

There is no school equal to a decent (体面的)home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.
There are two typical examples: Edison's mother and our mother. As you all know, Thomas Edison is one of the most outstanding scientists and inventors in the world. Unbelievably, young Tom was in school for only three months. It is said that he liked to ask strange questions, many of which have nothing to do with learning. His teacher didn't understand why he had so many strange questions. He didn't want to teach Tom any more. He asked Tom's mother to take the boy home. Tom's mother taught him to read and write, and she found him to be a very good pupil. He learned very fast and became very interested in science. It was she who played an important role in Edison's growth. Although we can't compare with Edison, our mother played a more important role in our growth than his mother. Our dad was an English teacher who taught high school students. For many years, he had been cautious and conscientious (认真的)towards work. Mom stayed home and homeschooled their four children. Three of us had no trouble in learning but my sister Catherine still could not read by fifth grade, and worse still, did not even know the alphabet (字 母表)
My mother did some research and found that Catherine had some sort of learning disability. She sent Catherine to a public school to get some help. Catherine made many friends at school and amazed everyone with her gift for telling creative stories in class, but she still couldn't master reading skills. After all the testing was done, the school had my parents come in. They were told that based on the test results, they should just take Catherine home, which was very similar to Edison's experience. However, the biggest difference is that Edison was not stupid, and my sister really had learning disabilities.

Before arriving in China, I had read various books relating to China, famous Chinese novels as well as non-fiction and the seeds of my fascination were sown. Therefore, when I arrived I couldn't have been more excited
to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the fantastic cities and everyday life-I was burning to explore.
Yet despite my enthusiasm, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't ignorance or laziness, but rather fright at the thought of attempting to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world. In my mind, the Chinese language was the privilege of the highly intelligent.
However, after a year in China I began to feel uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge I determined to begin my language journey.
In the two years since starting to learn I have made measurable progress. I found it less difficult than thought. When speaking to native Chinese speakers in Chinese they almost always understand me, I have also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over +00 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and rewarding.
In spite of my progress, it has still been the challenge that has taken a lot of hard work and commitment. The thing I find most discouraging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed, I can't always understand whafs been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent.
My biggest harvest from learning Chinese is that it's not only reachable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a diverse and interesting country. Now my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
Which can best describe the author's original impression about learning Chinese?
A. Boring. B. Demanding.
C. Pleasant. D. Discouraging.
What has the author found while learning Chinese?
A. Speaking Chinese is the most difficult. B. Many Chinese speak fluent English.
C. It isn't as tough as he once assumed. D. It is beyond his power to learn characters.
What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
Importance of learning Chinese.
Barriers of learning a new language.
Significant progress the author has made.
Certain difficulties the author met in learning Chinese.
A new opinion in learning.
