Introduction
Language learning has become an important aspect of individuals' lives due to globalization. English, being the most widely spoken language, has become essential in both personal and professional spheres. English language learners often encounter difficulties in pronunciation due to the complex phonetic and intonation patterns in the language. To facilitate language learning, researchers have developed various methods for generating exaggerated speech that may aid learners in improving accent and fluency. This paper will explore the research on generating exaggerated speech using visual and auditory cues in English language learning.
Auditory Exaggeration in Speech
Auditory exaggeration refers to the amplification of specific phonetic sounds in spoken words. Researchers have used various techniques to exaggerate phonetic sounds, including spectral modification, time-stretching, and pitch-shifting. Spectral modification changes the frequency content of the speech signal, while time-stretching and pitch-shifting change the timing and pitch of speech sounds, respectively.
Spectral Modification
Spectral modification involves the manipulation of speech sounds by altering their frequency content to make them more distinct and easier to perceive. Studies have shown the effectiveness of spectral modification in enhancing the perception of specific phonetic contrasts. For example, a study by Golestani and Zatorre (2004) showed that spectral modification improved the detection of voicing contrasts in a non-native language.
Time-stretching
Time-stretching involves the manipulation of speech sounds by slowing down or speeding up their duration. Studies have shown that time-stretching can be an effective method for improving the perception of specific phonetic contrasts. For example, a study by Giannakopoulou and colleagues (2013) found that time-stretching improved the perception of vowel duration contrasts in English.
Pitch-shifting
Pitch-shifting involves altering the pitch of speech sounds to emphasize their phonetic characteristics. Studies have shown that pitch-shifting can improve the perception of certain phonetic contrasts. For example, a study by Li and colleagues (2010) found that pitch-shifting improved the perception of tone contrasts in Mandarin Chinese.
Visual Exaggeration in Speech
Visual exaggeration refers to the amplification of facial expressions and other visual cues that aid in speech perception. Researchers have used various techniques to generate exaggerated speech visualizations, including lip movement amplification, facial feature exaggeration, and facial animation.
Lip Movement Amplification
Lip movement amplification involves the exaggeration of lip movements to aid in speech perception. Studies have shown that lip movement amplification can improve the perception of speech sounds, especially in noisy listening conditions. For example, a study by Sumby and Pollack (1954) found that lip movement amplification improved speech intelligibility in noisy listening environments.
Facial Feature Exaggeration
Facial feature exaggeration involves the amplification of other facial features, such as eyebrows, cheek movements, and eye movements, to aid in speech perception. Studies have shown that exaggerating these facial features can improve speech perception in some individuals. For example, a study by Kato and colleagues (2012) found that exaggerated facial expressions improved speech perception in individuals with hearing impairments.
Facial Animation
Facial animation involves the use of computer-generated animations to aid in speech perception. Researchers have developed computer systems that generate lip-synced animations that mimic the phonetic sounds in spoken words. Studies have shown that these animations can improve speech perception, especially in foreign language learning. For example, a study by Beskow and colleagues (2008) found that animated faces improved the perception of English consonants for Swedish listeners.
Conclusion
Exaggerated speech has been shown to aid in language learning, especially in improving accent and fluency. Both auditory and visual exaggeration techniques have been used to facilitate speech perception in language learning. Spectral modification, time-stretching, and pitch-shifting are common auditory exaggeration techniques, while lip movement amplification, facial feature exaggeration, and facial animation are visual exaggeration techniques. The effectiveness of these techniques depends on their application in specific contexts, such as noisy environments or hearing impairments. Further research is needed to develop more effective exaggeration techniques that cater to different learning contexts.
