It couldn’t be more perfect. The morning air was filled with the smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls (肉桂卷). They are legendary in this home. Oh, not the ones that come in a can.
The ones that grandmother creates. They take much longer, but they wouldn’t want it any other way.
When they visit her, they sleep in a little later. Not so much because they are tired from the

trip. They only live a few hours away. They really don’t need to sleep over, either, but they do for
all the right reasons.
It’s home. You don’t just visit home. You return to it. You re -live it. You soak in the smells of early
morning cinnamon. You roll over in the thought of sweet cream icing dripping off your chin. You stay in bed just a little longer so you can hear the sounds of home once more. The
clanking (丁当声) of the pans, the sound of the rolling pin, and the signal that makes you jump to
your feet... you’re home.
Mom and dad rush to get the children up. Running down the hallway they pause for moment to breathe in the smell of fresh coffee. Not just any coffee. This coffee is created in the same old
percolat or (咖啡滤壶) that grandmother has used since grandfather and she were married.
“It still works better than those new things they sell,” she would be quick to tell you.
Everyone now gathered around the kitchen table, they settle into a quiet almost trance-like
(出神同样) existence. Everyone’s eyes are now fixed on grandmother. Eight eyes follow each cinnamon roll as they are placed on the plate in front of them. You don’t dive into it. You enjoy
the moment as you watch the icing slowly melt down the sides.
“This is heavenly,” mother says. “You are an angel,” father adds.
Then, from the smallest child comes the biggest question.
“Grandmother, when you go to heaven can we still visit?” the child asks.
Grandmother takes her place at the head of the table, picks up her fork and says, “I will visit you.”
“How?” the child asks.
Grandmother takes her first bite of the cinnamon roll, places the fork back down and leans toward the child. Smiling, she places her finger on the child’s heart and says, “I’ll b e right h ere.
So mewhere in b et wee n .”
24. Why do they sleep in later?
A. Because they are tired from the trip. B. Because they live close to Grandmother.
C. Because they just relax themselves at home. D. Because they have no reason

to get up early.
25. From the passage, we can learn the Grandmother is .
A. lovely and optimistic B. kindly and diligent
C. strict and energetic D. merciful and determined
26. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A. The Grandmother won’t go anywhere.
B. The child can visit the Grandmother in heaven.
C. All the family will stay together forever no matter what. D. The sweet memories of the Grandmother will never die.
27. What can be the best title?
A. They’re home. B. A perfect day. C. Sleep in later. D. Grandmother’s story.

It sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, but a zombie (僵尸)-like disease is taking a loss on deer populations across the country. Chronic wasting disease (CWD), also known
as “zombie deer disease”, was first observed in deer populations during the 1960s, and now in some areas, the disease has infected 25 percent of the local deer population—and those figures are as 79 percent in highly-infected areas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It has been reported in 25 states and two Canadian provinces.
The disease causes the brains of infected animal—including deer, elk, caribou, and moose—to gradually deteriorate. In the end, the animals can almost seem like zombies, with
symptoms (症状) like drooling, aggression, extreme weight loss, stumbling, and tremors. The
condition is always fatal and there is no treatment.
Scientist can’ t explain exactly how CWD spreads, though they believe animals can become infected through polluted liquids and foods, and/or through bodily fluids. It’ s estimated that North American residents eat around 7,000-15,000 chronic wasting disease-ridden animals every year, according to the Alliance for Public Wildlife. And now some experts are wondering if it could spread to humans.
While there are currently no known cases of CWD in humans, a study conducted by the Alberta Prion Research Institute recently discovered that the disease can be spread to monkeys who’ve eaten infected deer meat. The primates chosen for the study were selected for their genetic similarity to humans. “The assumption was for the longest time that chronic wasting disease was not a threat to human health, ” Stefanie Czub, the lead researcher of the study told The Tyee. “But with the new data, it seems we need to revisit this view to some degree.”
28. What do we know about CWD from the first

paragraph?
A. It comes out of a horror movie. B. It has infected all the local deer. C. It is reducing deer populations. D. It was first observed in Canada.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “deteriorate” in paragraph 2?
A. Worsen. B. Grow. C. Practise. D. Lessen
30. How does CWD possibly spread?
A. Through drinking water. B. Through bodily fluids.
C. Through other wildlife. D. Through human’ s foods.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Monkeys love eating infected deer meat. B. Humans may still be in danger of CWD.
C. CWD is not a threat to human health at all. D. Primates share the same gene with humans.

Last week, two companies, Kitty Hawk and Uber, announced their plans to bring flying cars to reality very soon.
Imagine never having to worry about traffic, stop lights, or road construction. A flying car
would get to a place much faster than one travelling by road. On the other hand, imagine having to avoid drones ( 无人驾驶飞机) and other flying cars. Also, what if your batter y dies when you
are in the air? And, how will you know where to land?

- 9 -
Kitty Hawk is a start-up tech company supported by Google co-founder, Larry Page. According to the Kitty Hawk website, its car will be able to travel at speeds up to 40 kilometers an hour in the air. It says under US aviation law such a machine “does not require registration or a pilot’s
license and may be flown in uncongested (不拥挤旳) areas for recreational purposes.” As of now,
the car can only be flown over fresh water.
Kitty Hawk is making a list of people interested in buying the flying car. They must pay a deposit of US$100. Those who get their names on the list early will receive US$2, 000 off the final cost of the car. However, Kitty Hawk has not yet announced the price. Kitty Hawk expects its first flying cars will go on sale by the end of this year.
At a conference last week, Uber announced plans for flying taxis to begin carrying passengers. Unlike the Kitty Hawk company, Uber does not plan to build its flying cars. Instead, it will use the resources of
