“Morphology”(形态学,又:语言结构形态学或语素学) is the branch of grammar that studies the internal structure of words, and the rules by which words are formed.
It is generally divided into two fields: inflectional morphology and lexical/derivational morphology.

“morpheme” is the smallest unit in terms of relationship between expression and content, a unit which cannot be divided without destroying or drastically altering the meaning, whether it is lexical or grammatical.

语素的界定
三大标准:
1)同一分布位置(similar position)
2)意义一致(meaning consistency)
3)多次出现(multiple occurrence)

两大标准:
1)含义相近
2)发音相近

如: -er 在 worker, teacher, speaker, swimmer等词中意为“做…的人”, 属于同一语素,但在manner 一词并不是 man 和-er 合起来的意思,所以 manner 不能看作是由 man 和-er 两个语素构成,其中的-er 也不能看作是与 worker 中的-er 相同的语素。

有些语素可以单独作为词出现, 如man, made, kind, like, size 等
有些语素必须依托于其他语素, 如一些词缀{-ly }, {-ness }, {-hood }, { un-}, { in- }等
