Why do college students take part-time jobs?
According to a recent survey, about 25 percent of Chinese college students now hold a part-time or temporary(临时的) job and this figure increases to 72 percent during summer vacation. College students are working as tutors(家教), salespersons, and engineers, doing whatever work they can find.
Why do they want to do jobs usually requiring little skill and knowledge? The primary reason, I think, is money. Feeling the financial pressure as books, movies and bus fares have all gone up in price, there is scarcely(简直没有,几乎不) a young boy or girl who does not want to earn a little money to help cover the increasingly higher college costs and at best save enough to go traveling or buy things they have long desired. Besides they want to gain some experience in the ways of society. Working on a part-time basis(底部,基础) can provide them with a rare opportunity to know the outside world and prepare for a future career.
The significance(重要性,意义) for college students of doing a part-time job means more than money and experience: It will broaden(变宽,加宽) their outlook and exert(运用,发挥) a profound(深厚的,渊博的) influence on their personality and life.
