Java Lab SCUT 2013 1 SETTING UP: INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING JDK You must have a copy of the Java Runtime Environment on your system to run Java applications and applets. To develop Java applications and applets, you need the Java Development Kit, which includes the JRE. We will use the Java Standard Edition (SE) Development Kit (JDK) with this module. INSTALLING JDK FOR WINDOWS
Before you can develop Java application and applets, you need to: 1. Download the most recent JDK from http://java./javase/downloads/ for Windows operating system. 2. Once you have located the downloaded file named jdk-6u<version>-windows-, double-click it to start the installation. 3. Wait for the install to start. This may take a couple of minutes. 4. The “License Agreement” window will appear. You must accept these terms to continue. 5. The "Custom Setup" window offers the chance to select which parts of the JDK you want to install. It is best to stick with the default settings at this point. Click the Next button. 6. The downloading and installing process begin. It will take a few minutes to install the main features of the JDK. When the “Complete” screen appears, click on the Finish button. You have essfully installed the latest version of the Java Development Kit! 2. CONFIGURING THE INSTALLATION ON WINDOWS After installation of the JDK, you first need to update your PATH environment variable before using the piler and runtime. The steps are: 1. On the Desktop, right-click the puter icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. The System Properties dialog box will be opened. 2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Environment Variables button to open the Environment Variables dialog box. 3. In the User Variables section, select the PATH environment variable if available. If not, click New button to open the New User Variable dialog box. 4.
