Review of Last Week
INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS – as an academic field was established more than 50 years ago as a stream of social sciences;
Emerged in the US after WW 2 as large numbers of advisors, military personnel, students….began to move around the world and encounter new cultures, people and different values.
Key Influence : Restructuring of Germany and Japan and work on establishing the UN
Academics and Governments started to address-
The theoretical and practical issues of sending people on intercultural assignments.
And recognize that cultural understanding was a crucial issue in munication – and the ess of any project
From Practice to Theory
In 1940s academics such as Edward T. Hall begin to advise the US Government on policies for building positive relations;
There was understanding of other cultures and practices (especially in the UK due to experience in ruling an empire) but not so much in US government circles

Edward T. Hall begins to examine the way people from different cultures behave when they speak. Studies drew attention to:-
Non-munication
Proxemics – how personal space is evident munication;
And the importance of Culture munication

“about the details plexities of one of the world’s most significant problems: Intercultural relations”(1992, p. 76)
He drew on scholarship in the fields of :
- cultural anthropology
- linguistics
- study of animal behaviour
- Freudian psychoanalytic theory
