Cocktail
Definition
A cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink that contains three or more ingredients—at least one of the ingredients must be a spirit, one sweet/sugary and one sour/bitter.
History
The exact origins of the cocktail remain contested. During the second half of 18th century there is already a story that says that cocktail showed up during America independence, however the origin of cocktail is an unsolved mystery.
The first published reference to the cocktail appears in the Farmer's (Amherst, New Hampshire, April 28, 1803).
There are as many stories behind the origin of the name cocktail as there are behind the creation of the first Margarita or the Martini. As always, some are preposterous, some believable and who knows, one may be the truth. None the less, the stories are interesting.
