Prologue:
Earth is plex, dynamic that has changed continually since its origin some billion years ago. These changes are the result of internal and external processes that interact and affect each other, leading to the present-day features we observe. In fact, Earth is unique among the s of our solar system in that it supports life and has oceans of water, a hospitable atmosphere, and a variety of climates.
If we could film the history of Earth from its beginning billion years ago to the present and speed up that film so it could be shown as a feature movie, we would see a undergoing remarkable change. Its geography would change as continents moved about its surface, and as a result of these movements, ocean basins would open and ranges would form along continental margins or where continents collided with each other. Oceanic and atmospheric circulation patterns would shift in
response to the movement of continents. Massive ice sheets would form, grow, and then melt away. At other times, our film would show extensive swamps or vast interior deserts
Historical geology is the study of the origin and evolution of Earth. Geologists are interested not only in placing events in a chronological sequence but, more importantly, in explaining how and why past events took place. Recently, historical geology has taken on even greater importance because scientists in many disciplines are looking to the past to help explain current events (such as short and long-term climatic changes) and using this information to try and using this information to try and predict future trends.
