Acknowledgements
Above all, I want to express my sincere and heart-felt gratitude to my supervisor,
professor Liu Jiamei, for her insightful criticism and valuable advice. She spares no
efforts to read and revise my manuscripts. It is her wonderful teaching style and
erudition that cultivates my interests in literary analysis. In addition, her enthusiasm
and meticulousness in pursuit of academic study have set me a good example. I would
like to thank her for her thought-inspiring lectures on literature as well.

摘要
西奥多·德莱赛(1871-1945)是美国十九世纪末二十世纪初杰出的现实主义

原貌,影响深远,被誉为二十世纪美国城市小说的开拓者。其处女作《嘉莉妹妹》

市外乡人的典型,为寻求城市身份认同所经历的精神异化。正是这种崇尚金钱,
物欲膨胀的病态城市文明促发了主人公人性的迷失和心灵的畸变。这种变异也是
小说现代性特征的体现。
