Above all, I want to express my sincere and heart-felt gratitude to my supervisor,
professor Liu Jiamei, for her insightful criticism and valuable advice. She spares no
efforts to read and revise my manuscripts. It is her wonderful teaching style and
erudition that cultivates my interests in literary analysis. In addition, her enthusiasm
and meticulousness in pursuit of academic study have set me a good example. I would
like to thank her for her thought-inspiring lectures on literature as well.

teaching staffs in School of Foreign Languages and Literature, whose precious

摘要

西奥多·德莱赛(1871-1945)是美国十九世纪末二十世纪初杰出的现实主义
作家。他在创作中率先关注了城市这一主题,揭示了工业文明下的美国城市生活
原貌,影响深远,被誉为二十世纪美国城市小说的开拓者。其处女作《嘉莉妹妹》
一直被认为是作者进行现代城市文明创作的代表作。
作家对城市的关注,不仅因为其自身具有在城市中漂泊经历,更在于被城市
文明本身所具备的矛盾性特点的吸引。乍一看,城市在外来人的眼中的印象是这
样一个场所:繁华、开放、多样化、文明发达。在这样一个更自由的环境场所中
人们能拥有更多实现自身梦想的机会,即通过自己的诚实,艰辛劳作过上好生活。
这是城市文明所表现出来的虚幻一面。深入观察后,不难发现,在城市繁荣背后,
到处隐藏着道德的陷阱和城市的归属权问题。对金钱,权利和名誉的无止境的追
求使得人们渐渐远离了真实的自我。漂泊在物欲横流的都市,嘉莉妹妹,作为城
市外乡人的典型,为寻求城市身份认同所经历的精神异化。正是这种崇尚金钱,
物欲膨胀的病态城市文明促发了主人公人性的迷失和心灵的畸变。这种变异也是
小说现代性特征的体现。
总之,城市文化是德莱赛永恒关注的创作题材,也是蕴意深远的故事情节与
背景。他的城市创作揭露了现代化初期显现端
