The International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) realizes an ideal reference system, the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS), by precise equatorial coordinates of extragalactic radio sources observed in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) programmes.

ITRS is realised by the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) based upon estimated coordinates and velocities of a set of stations observed byVLBI, LLR GPS, SLR, and DORIS. The ITRS can be connected to the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS) by use of the IERS Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP).
The x and y coordinates of the EOP are Celestial Ephemeris Pole (CEP) relative to the IRP(IERS Reference Pole).
