Term paper for English Linguistics
I read the book An introduction to Linguistics carefully during my spare time. It is a book about linguistics by Stuart C. Poole, jointly published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and Macmillan Publishers Ltd. It can be regarded as an introductory book for elementary linguistics, aimed to make these publications in linguistics available to foreign language teachers and post graduate students of linguistics in China. The book is a representative selection of up-to-date writings on the most important branches of linguistics studies, by scholars who are regarded as leading authorities in their fields, and also, with such a wide range of materials in linguistics will greatly help us build up our own knowledge and understanding of the subject. The whole book is divided into 12 chapters, including the definition of language, lexis, semantics, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, regional variation, social variation, historical linguistics, the languages of Western Europe and wring systems. It also helps contribute to the development of linguistics as a discipline in universities and colleges, helping overcome the division between Chinese linguistics and English linguistics, and so on which hinder the process of linguistics as a unified science.
It can also do us a favor in gaining an insight into the nature of nature, whether from a theoretical point of view or in allocation to their professional activities as language teachers. It gave us an opportunity to pursue linguistics studies.
