A Study on Pragmatic Differences between English and Chinese Polite Expressions from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication
Abstract
In cross-cultural communication, language is the most widely used tool. From the expression of verbal communication, it can be clearly seen that the differences are caused by different Chinese and Western cultural backgrounds. In today's society, international communication is becoming more and more frequent, and the communication between Chinese and Western cultures is becoming deeper and deeper, which inevitably brings the communication between Chinese and English cultures contradiction and conflict. At this time the politeness principle and polite language of the expression between the two sides of the speakers will become very important in terms of cognition and understanding. In the process of cross-cultural communication, politeness principle is the principle that both parties must abide by. Both Chinese and Western scholars are studying politeness principle. Any neglect of politeness principle will affect the smooth progress of cross-cultural communication. It is beneficial to improve the communication between the two cultures when deepening the understanding of the origins and differences between Chinese and western politeness principle, which cultural communication ensures the smooth progress of cross-cultural communication
