Abby, a 57 year-old African-American, is seeking counseling for her recent depression because her husband has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Abby spends most of her time in bed crying, and she feels guilty of not being able to accompany her husband to medical appointments and give him support. She also felt that she was never a happy person throughout her life so far. Jungian approach will be used in analyzing this case. The ethical and legal issues that pertain to this case will also be evaluated.
Jungian approach refers to Carl Jung's unique concept of human development that places central importance on the midlife psychological changes (Corey, 2009). Jungian approach also extends Freud's interpretation of the unconscious to a more complex and positive view, viewing it as a source of personal growth as well as of confusion and symptoms (Seligman, 2006, p. 98).
Strengths and Limitations of Jungian Approach
Strengths
One of the primary strengths of the Jungian approach is that "the theory is based on the assumption that humans tend to move toward the fulfillment or realization of all of their capabilities" (Corey, 2009, p. 79). This is a dramatic difference from Freudian approach in that the traditional psychoanalysis believes that clients are merely shaped by past events, and human nature is basically deterministic.
