The Joy Luck Club
Most films these days are easy to describe because they fit into types such as love stories or thrilliers. But The Joy Luck Club is different. It is a story about love and conflicts between four daughters and their mothers.
It shows us the lives of four Chinese women who were new immigrants to Sanfrancisco during the 1950s. The four women acquaint themselves with each other by playing mahjong. They became closed friends because they had similar experiences and they called themselves The Joy Luck Club. As a mother, each of them has a lot of problems with their daughters.
It was the gap between different generations and the clash of different cultures and different values of society. At the same time, what cannot be ignored is the deep and natural bonding between the mothers and daughters, which even cannot be cut by the severe conflicts.
The relationship between those Chinese mothers and their Americanized children focuses my eyes on relationship between us and our mothers. In reality, problems do exist between us. Our mothers force us to do what they consider is right . On the contrary, we believe that we have old enough and have the ability to make our own decisions.
