An analysis of the differences between Chinese-English phatic communion

Abstract
consummated only by the breaking of bread and the communion of food、After the first formula, there comes a flow of language, purposeless expressions of preference or aversion, accounts of irrelevant happenings, comments on what is perfectly obvious、There can be no doubt that we have a new type of linguistic use — phatic communion、They fulfill a social function and that is their principal aim, they are neither the result of intellectual reflection, nor do they necessarily arouse reflection in the listener、(1923:10)
According to the opinion of Quirk and Stein (1990:4), address system in the formula can also be seen as phatics, in communication, how people call each other depends on their age、 gender, social status and personal relations etc、、(Liu 2000)
