Obama hails the irreversible changes sweeping Myanmar
President Barack Obama paid a historic visit to Myanmar yesterday, saying that the political changes afoot in the country were irreversible as its people could finally see and taste freedom after five decades of dictatorship.
“Something is happening in this country that cannot be reversed,” Mr Obama said on the first visit to the country by a US president.
He also told an audience at Yangon university that Myanmar’s military must accept restraints on its power, noting that “the US has the strongest military in the world, but it must submit to civilian control”.
Mr Obama’s visit came just two weeks after his re-election to a second term in office, during which the president intends to continue his administration’s “pivot” of diplomatic and military resources towards the Asia Pacific region. Resource-rich Myanmar has been a traditional ally of China, which is wary of Washington’s renewed focus on its backyard.
