13、The Amazing Brain
Sleep. It’s something we spend about a third of our lives doing, but do any of us really understand what it’s all about?
We all know based on our own experience that when we sleep, it clears our minds, and when we don’t sleep, it leaves our minds murky (
昏沉沉的). But when we still haven’t understood why sleep has this amazing function for the mind.
Recently biologists have found that sleep may actually be a kind of design solution to some of the brain’s most basic needs, the way that brain meets the high demands and the narrow margins (范围) that set it apart from all the other organs (器官) of the body. The brain has a large pool of clean, clear fluid (流体) called cerebrospinal fluid. Biologists call it the CSF. The CSF fills the space that surrounds the brain, and wastes from inside the brain make their way out to the CSF, which gets the waste into the blood. What was surprising to them was that the fluid on the outside of the brain didn’t stay on the outside. Instead, the CSF goes into and through the brain along the outsides of the blood vessels (血管), it was actually helping to clear away and clean the waste from the spaces between the brain’s cells (细胞). This only happens in the sleeping brain.
Recent research suggests that what’s happening is that when the brain is awake and is at its most busy, it puts off clearing away the waste from the spaces between its cells until later. When we go to sleep, it gets into a kind of cleaning mode to clear away the waste from the spaces between its cells.
We go to sleep every single night, but our brains never rest. While our body is still and our mind is off walking in dreams somewhere. Like our housework, it’s dirty and a thankless job, but it’s also important. In your house, if you stop cleaning your kitchen for a month, your home will become completely unlivable very quickly. But in he brain, the situation is much more serious because when it comes to cleaning the brain, it is the very health and function of the mind and the body that’s at stake. That is why understanding these very basic housekeeping functions of the brain today may prevent and treat diseases of the mind tomorrow.

14、Xiao Jing, a Beijing girl took home a cup of iced tea for her father after having supper at McDonald’s. But when the father happily started to drink his daughter’s gift, he found that there was a filter tip (过滤嘴) inside it. Xiao Jing and her father got very angry.
This is not the first time that McDonald’s has let Chinese customers down. According to a CCTV program on World Consumer Rights Day(消费者权益保护日) on March 15, a McDonald’s restaurant in Beijing sold chicken wings 90 minutes after they were cooked. The company’s rules set a 30-minutes limit. What’s more, some workers changed desserts’ expiration dates (保质期) or even put them into a new bag or box to sell them again.
McDonald’s China released a letter of apology on their official micro blog (微博) soon after the program. “McDonald’s China pays great attention to this. We will immediately look into this accident, deal with it seriously and take practical actions to apologize (道歉) to consumers. We’ll try our best to provide healthy and safe food,” the letter said.

15、In order to deal with the shortage (短缺) of women’s restrooms in public places, unisex (不分性别的) public toilets have been introduced into many cities. Will you feel comfortable using such a public toilet? You’re welcome to share your ideas.
Cathy (China)
Toilets should be separated into men’s and women’s. As a woman, I don’t want to share the same toilet with men which will make me feel embarrassed. I don’t think that making all the toilets unisex can solve this problem.
Mark (Australia)
I think increasing the number of women’s toilets is the best choice. I always feel sorry for the ladies as there never seems to be enough toilets and they always have to wait in line.
Roger (the US)
In the United States, there are lots of public unisex toilets. The toilet here is a one-room toilet, so each person can be alone with a locked door. When a woman leaves, a man can go in. In my opinion, it is silly and very ________ for men and women (and kids) to mix together in the same room!
Nick (the UK)
There have been unisex toilets all over London for years. This just isn’t a big deal. If the doors offer enough safety and protection, I don’t have a problem with it in most situations.
