ABSTRACT
Discourse teaching method is one of the effective teaching methods that can enhance the acquisition of the English language. It focuses on the use of language in actual communication rather than just focusing on isolated grammatical structures or vocabulary. This paper attempts to explore the importance of discourse teaching method in English language teaching by examining how discourse teaching method can improve students' communicative competence and language proficiency. Additionally, the paper also seeks to explore the various activities that can be employed to enhance discourse teaching in English language classrooms.
INTRODUCTION
Teaching English to non-native learners can be quite challenging, especially when it comes to improving students' communicative competence. Communicative competence refers to the ability to apply language knowledge effectively and appropriately in various social settings (Canale & Swain, 1980). The use of a discourse teaching method in English language classrooms has been shown to be effective in improving students' communicative competence and language proficiency. Discourse teaching method focuses on the use of language in actual communication rather than just focusing on isolated grammatical structures or vocabulary. Thus, this paper will highlight the importance of discourse teaching method in English language teaching and ways in which it can be incorporated in the classroom.
DISCOURSE TEACHING METHOD
Discourse, in this context, refers to the use of language in actual communication. Discourse teaching method is an approach that emphasizes language use in communication and the incorporation of authentic language materials in teaching. According to Halliday (1978), discourse has three elements: the context, the meaning, and the form. The context refers to the situation in which the language is being used, the meaning refers to the message being conveyed, and the form refers to the structure and rules of the language used.
Discourse teaching method involves integrating the three elements of discourse to create language learning activities that facilitate the acquisition of language knowledge. It is important to note that discourse teaching method is not just limited to spoken language, but also encompasses written language. Therefore, it requires the use of various types of materials such as articles, essays, dialogues, and stories.
The use of discourse teaching method in English language classrooms promotes the development of communicative competence. Students are able to acquire language knowledge in a meaningful context that helps them relate to and utilize the language in real-life situations. It makes learning more engaging and helps students apply what they have learned in authentic situations. Students are able to experience language as a form of social interaction, rather than a set of rules and vocabulary to be memorized.
ACTIVITIES FOR DISCOURSE TEACHING METHOD
1. Group Discussions: In this activity, students engage in group discussions about a specific topic. Students are encouraged to express their opinions and ideas in a clear and concise manner. This activity promotes critical thinking, fosters collaboration, and enhances communication skills.
2. Role Play: In role-play activities, students are assigned roles and engage in real-life conversations. This helps students improve their language skills and develop their confidence in using English in real-life situations. Role-play activities can be used to practice various communication skills such as negotiation, persuasion, and argumentation.
3. Listening and Speaking: Listening and speaking activities are essential for discourse teaching method. Students are required to listen and understand spoken English and respond appropriately. This activity promotes active listening and effective communication skills.
4. Reading and Writing: Reading and writing activities can be incorporated into discourse teaching method by using authentic materials that reflect real-life situations and contexts. Students are required to read and comprehend the materials to write a summary, response or analysis. This activity promotes critical thinking, vocabulary acquisition, and writing skills.
5. Debate: A debate is a structured argument in which two teams present arguments for and against a specific topic. This activity promotes critical thinking, research skills, public speaking abilities and enhances communication skills.
CONCLUSION
Discourse teaching method is an effective approach to teaching English language. It focuses on the use of language in actual communication, thus improving students' communicative competence and language proficiency. The incorporation of interesting and authentic materials in the classroom enhances student engagement and provides a meaningful context for language acquisition. The discussed activities promote critical thinking, collaboration, effective communication, and enhances language skills. Therefore, English language teachers should adopt discourse teaching method in their classrooms to help their students learn the language in a more meaningful and effective way.
