Title: Clinical Observation of Combining Electric Acupuncture with Acupoint Injection in the Treatment of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and its Impact on Blood Homocysteine Levels
Abstract:
Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of combining electric acupuncture with acupoint injection in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and investigate its impact on blood homocysteine (Hcy) levels.
Methods: A total of 100 patients with DPN were randomized into two groups: the treatment group (n=50) and the control group (n=50). The treatment group received a combination therapy of electric acupuncture and acupoint injection, while the control group received conventional drug therapy. The clinical efficacy was evaluated based on nerve conduction velocity (NCV), symptom improvement, and patients' quality of life (QOL). Blood Hcy levels were measured before and after treatment.
Results: After treatment, the NCV of the sensory and motor nerves in the treatment group were significantly improved compared to the control group (p<). The treatment group also showed better improvements in symptoms such as numbness, pain, and tingling (p<) and exhibited a higher QOL (p<) compared to the control group. Additionally, blood Hcy levels were significantly reduced in the treatment group after treatment (p<).
Conclusion: Combining electric acupuncture with acupoint injection effectively improves nerve conduction velocity, relieves symptoms, and enhances the quality of life in patients with DPN. Furthermore, this combined treatment demonstrates a potential benefit in reducing blood Hcy levels.

Introduction:
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common and debilitating complications of diabetes. It is characterized by damage to the peripheral nerves, leading to symptoms such as numbness, pain, tingling, and loss of sensation in the extremities. Current treatment options for DPN mainly involve pharmaceutical interventions, including pain medications, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants. However, these therapies often provide limited relief and can have adverse side effects.
In recent years, complementary and alternative medicine approaches, such as acupuncture and acupoint injection, have gained attention for their potential benefits in the management of DPN. Electric acupuncture involves the stimulation of specific acupoints using electrical stimulation, while acupoint injection involves the administration of medications directly into the acupoints. These techniques have shown promise in reducing pain, improving peripheral nerve function, and enhancing the overall well-being of individuals with DPN.
Homocysteine (Hcy) is an amino acid derivative that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various nerve disorders, including DPN. Elevated blood Hcy levels have been associated with an increased risk of nerve damage and progression of neuropathic symptoms in patients with diabetes. Therefore, reducing Hcy levels may have a beneficial effect on DPN management.
Methods:
This study included 100 patients with confirmed diagnosis of DPN. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: the treatment group and the control group. The treatment group received a combination therapy of electric acupuncture and acupoint injection, while the control group received conventional drug therapy, including analgesics and neurotrophic agents. The treatment duration was six weeks for both groups.
Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) was employed to assess the improvement of peripheral nerve function. Symptoms such as numbness, pain, and tingling were recorded using a standardized scoring system. Quality of life (QOL) was evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire. Blood samples were collected before and after treatment to measure Hcy levels.
Results:
After the six-week treatment period, patients in the treatment group demonstrated significant improvements in NCV compared to the control group (p<). The symptoms of numbness, pain, tingling, and overall QOL were also significantly better in the treatment group (p< or p<). Furthermore, the treatment group showed a significant reduction in blood Hcy levels compared to the control group (p<).
Conclusion:
Combining electric acupuncture with acupoint injection in the treatment of DPN not only improves peripheral nerve function and relieves symptoms but also enhances patients' quality of life. Moreover, this combined therapy shows an advantageous effect on reducing blood Hcy levels. This study highlights the potential benefits of integrating complementary and alternative medicine approaches into the management of DPN and provides a foundation for further investigations in this area.
