Austen’s View of Marriage in Pride and Prejudice
Abstract
“Pride and Prejudice” was a very popular novel by Jane Austen and it was read widely all over the world. Jane Austen was one of the distinguished realistic novelists in the 19th century-English literature. At that time, marriage was the only way for women to gain social status and recognition. It can be divided into several typical through the novel of marriage, then analyzes the value orientation of this marriage. Some people may realize that marriage can provide opportunities of social status and financial support, money and social status was the most closely connected in their decision of marital partners. For a long time, both in the Oriental culture and western culture, about marriage, there is a very approximate criterion: perfect-match. To some extent, the standard emphasizes the material base of marriage, namely the importance of love and wealth for the marriage. To describe the tangle of several typical marriages of “Pride and Prejudice”, the author Jane Austen so as to express the advance of the way of marriage, she thought, and a happy marriage is love plus money. In the context of today's society, because the ideology and value orientation of our times are changed and recreated, “leftover women” require their Mr. Right more specific: appearance, talent, education, character, economic and so on, those can be summed up in three words: “Grosvenor LTD handsome”. Across cultural boundaries, “Grosvenor LTD handsome” standards and marriage in “Pride and Prejudice” value reference idea coincide in the cycle of history?
