In his seventy years ,Defoe passed through all extremes of life. But two fact stand out clearly and are worth mentioning
1)He was jack-of-all-trades. Such as a journalist ,pamphleteer, novel-writing.
2) He used to be imprisoned in Newgate prison(纽盖特监狱).
3)He was a radical Nonconformist in religion—a puritan zeal (热情)for reform.

It was based on the true experience of Alexander selkirk ,a scottish sailor.
He had been marooned off the coast of Chile on the island of Juan Fernandez,where he had lived for five years.
Defoe used many incidents of his own imagination.
