THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Seven out of the eight Millennium Development Goals, depend on measures that are linked to
the achievement of VISION 2020 objectives:
MDG 1
Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Visual impairment is a major cause and consequence of unnecessary human suffering, often leading to poverty, unemployment, ill health, social exclusion (only 3-4% of people with disabilities worldwide benefit from development activities) and early death.
VISION 2020 programmes helps to reduce household, community and national poverty by seeking the best possible vision for all people, thereby contributing directly to improvements in quality of life and creating more favourable economic, social and health conditions.
MDG 2&3
Achieve universal primary education and promote gender equality and empower women
Approximately 90% of visually impaired children in low e countries are deprived of schooling.
VISION 2020 programmes improves access to educational and employment opportunities by using a wide range of public health interventions that strive to maintain or increase the number of children in school, free from hunger, malnutrition and blindness.

Reduce child mortality
