Folding Beijing authored by Hao Jingfang won Hugo Award for Best Novelette(2016) and Locus Award Nominee for Best Novelette(2016), and it was collected in Invisible s, an anthology of contemporary Chinese Science Fiction and Translated by Ken Liu who also Translated 2015 Hugo Award winner Wu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem.
The Story is set in future Beijing, a city rebuilt into Three Spaces that folds and unfolds every 24 hours. The inhabitants of each space are put into a sleep by a released gas while their part of the city folds up and disappears underground.
One side of the earth is First Space living five million of wealthy and powerful people who enjoy 24 hours in every 48 hours above ground. The other side shared by Second and Third Space with respectively Twenty-five million of the White collars and fifty million of the underclass.
Second Space opens for 16 hours and Third Space only 8 hours above ground. The Protagonist Lao Dao, a 48 years old single male, was a waste worker in Third Space.
PLOTS
Lao Dao, a waste processing worker of the third class, finds a message from Qin Tian, a graduate student in Second class. Qin offers Lao Dao money, if he can delivery a love letter to Yi Yan, Qin's lover in First class.
To make enough money for his adopted daughter Tangtang's kindergarten tuition, Lao Dao accepts this job. After he manages to arrive First class, he finds that Yi Yan is actually a married woman, who offers Lao Dao more money to hide this fact from Qin. On the way back, L
