In 1845,he built himself a small frame house on the shores of Walden Pond, and lived there for two years alone, a life of labor and study.
Walden,or Life in the Woods which was first released in 1854 had been pubilshed for thousands of times and had hundreds of editions in the 156 years since Thoreau passed away.
And untill today,it’s still read by people
from every corner of the world.
No wife
No friend
No servants
He supported himself by growing vegetables and by surveyingand doing odd jobs in the nearby village.
He reduced his material needs by living simply, so that he would not have to spend much time supporting a lifestyle that he did not need or care about.
How did Thoreau live in the woods?
In Walden's "Where I Lived, & What I Lived for" ,he describes an motive :
I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep
and suck out all the marrow of life!To put to rout all that was not life. And not,
when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. -----Thoreau
