THE INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
HARBORS AND THE ECONOMIC GROWTH
POLE OF THE SEAPORTS
ABSTRACT
Throughout ancient and modern history, port cities’ industry development is
closely related to port itself. The example that domestic port cities are mainly
top developed metropolitans proves that port takes a positive role for
economic development. This thesis which leverages French economist
Fransois Perroux’s theory of the economic growth pole summarizes port city’s
concept of economic growth pole in order to find out trend and character of
china port city’s economic growth, meanwhile find out port city’s economic
growth pole through analyzing correlation between port city’s industries
growth and Port Throughput.
This thesis firstly introduces current status of domestic and international port
city, the theory of economic growth pole and correlation, then proves intrinsic
relationship between economic and port growth of port cites by giving some
examples of Euro and China port cities, finally build mathematical analysis
model to calculate their correlation, ultimately by using port throughput,

industry growth, etc. indicators data of domestic four classic port cities which
are Shanghai, Ningbo, Tianjin and Guangzhou, find out port city’s economic
growth poles are transport storage and post industry, wholesale/retail industry
and finance and insurance industry. Besides analyzing behind reason that
these four industries e port city’s growth pole, this thesis also take Yang
Shan port city as an example to gives some constructive suggestions on how
to develop port cities and their economic development.
