In Pride and Prejudice

Abstract Through textual analysis of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, I discuss gender
relations in 18th century’s England, with special attention to social and historical contexts in Victorian
age. Proceeding from a working definition of “gender inequality”, I argue that women, yesterday or
today, are not considered men’s equals and are yet in their pursuit of gender equality.

Gender inequality is a byproduct of patriarchy in various cultural traditions. What does the word
“inequality” mean? It means “an unfair situation, in which some groups in society have less money,
