Abstract
The Scarlet Letter, as Hawthorne’s masterpiece, is a great work in the history of American literature. Research on its symbolism, characterization and feminism has been emerging in an endless stream through the ages. While what appeals the author of this paper most is Hawthorne’s ambivalent thought. Simultaneously, he supports the feminist movement; while influenced by the patriarchal ideology, he does not know where the blame for women’s inferiority lies? He extols the beauty of true love, while he is also fettered by the sacred rules of Puritanism. However, his confusion and inner conflicts are the reliable basis for us to get a better understanding of this work.
