As being black and female at the same time, Morrison attaches special importance to black female experience especially to black female’s development of se lf. She creates impressive black characters who inevitably lose the struggle against the double oppression of gende r and race or who inevitably lose the battle against the evil inside, for instance, Pecola Breedlove in The Bluest Eye , and Sula in Sula . Except for her concern of blac k female experience, she also demonstrates traditional black culture in her works. Morrison values extraordinarily the strength munity and ancestor, as well as the role that black male plays in black female’s development of self. Sula is the second published book of Toni Morrison . It is interpreted uniquely from the point of view of characterization of the prot agonist and its plot by different scholars and critics since its publication. This accounts to Morrison’s elaborate depi ction of mon black females and her thought-provoking themes. This thesis probes into how black cultural elements affect black women’s development of self.
