Abstract British woman writer Jane Austen was known for her superb irony skills . And the masterpiece Pride and Prejudice show s her mature iron ical art skills. Irony pervades the whole novel of Pride and Prejudice , and is rate d in the characterization, plot development and novel structure, which (语法错误) are the essence of Austen ’ed ies . In this paper , the author analyzes Austen ’s application of irony in shaping character in Pride and Prejudice from the following three aspects: character shap ing , character speech act and character relationship . In character building , the main character s are divided into round characters and flat characters; in character speech act, according ) to speech act theory , figure s’ speech act irony in Pride and Prejudice is divided into four kinds: representative irony , directive irony , commissive i rony and expressive irony ; in irony about the character relation ship s, four relationship of marriage in the work mainly are analyzed.
