This novel can be divided into three parts of Pip's life expectations.
Pip’s three expectations
In the first expectation, Pip lives with his ill-tempered older sister and her strong but gentle husband, Joe Gargery. He and Joe are often beaten by his sister. While Pip is satisfied with his life until he is hired by a wealthy woman, Miss Havisham. After that, he has to bear that old lady and her daughter, Estella’s humiliation. He loves Estella gradually. From then on, Pip aspires to leave behind his simple life and be a gentleman.
After years as companion to Miss Havisham and Estella, he spends more times as an apprentice to Joe, so that he tries to be a blacksmith. But his life changes completely when he is visited by a London lawyer, Mr Jaggers. Pip is told that he is given a great deal of property and will be trained to be a gentleman at the behest of an anonymous benefactor.
