The greatest poet of the Victorian Age -- Alfred Tennyson 0803 班朱丽佳 Historical Background The Victorian age generally covers the period of time when Queen Victoria was on the throne( 王位)from 1837 to 1901. In the history of England, the period has generally been regarded as one of the most glorious in the development of the country. The Victorian Age can be divided into three periods: (1)1832-1848: a time of social unrest; (2)1848-1870: a period of economic prosperity and religious controversy (争论) ; (3)1870-1901: a period of decay of Victorian values. Literary Characteristics The Victorian literature is characterized by both continuity of romanticism and a shift toward realism. It is also a time that the poetry shift towards novels. There are three great poets of this period.
