1 On Whose Promise do you Rely? Issue date: 19 Aug 2007 In the year 1863 an American president, Abraham Lincoln, proclaimed that all men are equal regardless of the colour of their skin. A few years later was the American Civil War where many people were killed. Five days after the ending of this war he was shot dead in a theatre balcony. In 1957 in a stadium containing about 1/4 white and 3/4 black people stood and listened to Martin Luther King. He made a speech: ‘'I had a dream that all men will be equal ...... Let freedom rule and ring us all ....... when black men and white men will shout - Free at last, O God Almighty, free at last!’ After that he stopped speaking and there was pause where everything was quiet. Then everyone started to shout his last refrain. mentator there said: You almost felt for a short period of time that heaven was here on earth! However in 1968 he was shot dead in a balcony - and that dream went with the man. We had the Florida riots a few years ago which showed that promise not to be fulfilled, the race hatred and persecution.! In 1938, a man stepped off a plane in England, waving a piece of paper to the cameras saying: 'Peace in our time'. within a year there was a world war and when it finished, 55 million lives later, it gave lie to that piece of paper!
