There are church weddings with agreat deal offanfare; there are weddings on mountain-tops with guests barefooted; and there have been weddings onthe ocean floor with oxygen tanks for the guests. But many weddings, nomatter where orhow they are performed, include certain traditional customs. Before acouple ismarried, they e engaged. And then invitations are sent tothose who live nearby, their close friends and their relatives who live far away. When everything isready, es the most exciting moment. The wedding itself usually lasts between 20and 40minutes. The wedding party enters the church while the wedding march[1] isplayed. The bride carrying abouquet enters last with her father who will "give her away[2]". The groom enters the church from aside door. When the wedding party isgathered bythe altar, the bride and groom exchange vows. Itis traditional touse the words "To have and tohold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, insickness and inhealth, tolove and tocherish, till death douspart[3]". Following the vows, the couple exchange rings. Wearing the wedding ring onthe fourth finger ofthe left hand isanold custom. After the ceremony there isoften aparty, called a"reception" which gives the wedding guests anopportunity tocongratulate the newlyweds. The car inwhich the couple leaves the church isdecorated with balloons, streamers and shaving cream. The words "Just Married" are painted onthe trunk orback window. The bride and groom run tothe car under ashower ofrice[4] thrown bythe wedding guests. When the couple drives away from the church, friends often chase them incars, honking and drawing attention tothem.
