From the picture, we can see a female mathematics teacher is giving the students a lesson on Multiplication Table. One of the students raises a question: No offense, but by the time we re in the job market, won t that stuff be outdated? And the teacher looks surprised and embarrassed after hearing this. What the picture points out is the phenomenon that some students are challenging the necessity of the importance of learning basic skills, which is in fact a widely held view among many of us, especially young people.
Many reasons contribute to this phenomenon. For one thing, it is the fact that we are living in a world of fierce competition that urges us to arm ourselves with up-to-date professional skills so as to adjust to the changes of the society and the increasingly demanding employment standards. For another, most people hold the view that basic skills many not be applied to the practical use immediately so that they always ignore the importance of learning basic skills.
