In the reading material, three reasons are given to prove the advantages of genetically modified trees. However, the lecturer raises serious counter arguments against the reading paragraphs by providing drastically different evidence of genetically modified trees.
First of all, the author points out that genetically modified trees are prone to be stronger and can put up with harsh condition such as virus or cold weather. However, in the lecture the professor claims that in some situations genetically modified trees are actually more vulnerable than normal trees in that they are designed to resist specific virus or condition. Once there appears a new pest or climate, all of the genetically modified trees may die out. Thus, the explanation of the speaker directly contradicts with what is stated in the passage.
Moreover, whereas the author argues that genetically modified trees can help to generate more income for farmers, the lecturer holds an opposing view. The lecturer contends that although genetically modified trees can produce more fruits, the price of seeds of the genetically modified trees sold by large companies are extremely high. What's more? Farmers cannot use the seeds produced by the trees to grow genetically modified trees. They have to pay for the expensive tree seeds every time they plant. It will indeed cost farmers more money, which is contrary to what is stated in the passage.
Finally, the lecturer stated that genetically modified trees will cause detrimental effect to the wild trees, contradicting what is presented in the passage that genetically modified trees can protect wild trees by avoiding overexploitation. According to the professor, genetically modified trees grow more aggressively than normal trees and they tend to be stronger. So when genetically modified trees are planted along with normal trees they will compete for resources with wild trees thereby posing threaten to local wild trees.
