A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in one geographical area at the same time.

定义1：Population of populations （Levins 1970）.
定义2：局域小（地理）种群通过一定程度的个体交流而连接在一起所组成的区域范围内的小种群集合（Hanski 1994）。

适宜的生境(suitable habitat)以离散斑块形式存在。这些斑块均可为目标物种所占据(occupied);
所有斑块内的局域种群(local population)都有灭绝的风险。不存在永恒的大陆斑块；
离散斑块间不可过于隔离而阻碍了重新侵占（re-colonization)的发生；
各个局域种群的兴-灭动态不能完全同步。否则整个集合种群续存时间不会长于灭绝风险最小的局域种群。
