论曹禺戏剧的艺术风格 A study on Cao Yu's artistic style
Abstract
Cao Yu is an exceptional playwright in the history of modern Chinese drama. His
early works, like Thunderstorm, Sunrise, The Wilderness and Peking Man, show his
insight about art and his creativity. These works are rare and deserving praise. They
are really perfections of Chinese drama and receive great attention. However, the peak
of his career does not last long. It is regretful and it is worthy of pondering and
researching.
Although there are a lot of articles dealing with the style of Cao Yu’s plays, I still
want to make attempts to study his plays and express my opinions and feelings.
In the introduction, I sort out the previous studies about the style of Cao Yu’s
plays. I evaluate them and then discuss the purpose, significance and the desired
effect of my thesis.
The first chapter will analyze and interpret the style of the plays by close reading
the plays and studying relationship between Cao Yu and outside world, such as his
relationship with his family and his relationship with New Culture Movement.
Chapter two makes an interpretation on and takes a guess about the sources of
his plays. I try to improve that humanism and individualism are the features of his
works. His plays express his sympathy.
Chapter three discusses the rebel in Cao Yu’s plays by analyzing the characters
such as Zhou Fanyi, Chen Bailu, Qiu Hu, Hua Jinzi, Su Fang, Li Shiqing, etc. I will
elaborate on the tragedy in his plays and analyze the change of his themes.
The conclusion will briefly summarize the analyses of his artistic style. I will
point out the unique function, status and ing of his artistic style.
