Abstract
This paper is a systematic exploration of the schistosomiasis-prevention
strategies in Jiangxi province since 1949. Generally, the prevention priorities
underwent three stages from “extinction of oncomelania”, to “synchronical treatment
of human and animals” and to “control of sources of infection”. The shifts reflect the
Party and the Government’s increasingly rational attitudes toward the natural
environment in the prevention: from “conquering” the environment to
“compromising” it and to now consciously “respecting” it. Nevertheless, the present
strategy is still efficient to limited extent and unable to fully eradicate the disease. The
extinction of schistosomiasis relies on two possibilities: social progress and medical
technology development.
