The Iron Bridge, spanning the Severn river inShropshire, England, isn't aparticularly large orornate bridge, but itdoes have something that made itunique: it's the first bridge pletely out ofcast iron. Inthe 18th century, Shropshire was rich iniron and coal -indeed, there were more iron factories within two-mile radius ofthe town than any other city inthe world. Itwas also there that iron was first smelt with coke. Soitwas only natural that the bridge would bemade out ofiron, astronger alternative towood. The construction of the Iron Bridge was carried out byalocal master ironworker named Abraham Darby III. About 400 tons (363 tonnes) ofcast iron was used, with about 800 separate castings. The Iron Bridge has 5arch ribs, each cast intwo halves. Itonly took three months toput the parts together (which they did using screws instead ofbolts!). The ease and speed ofthe Iron Bridge's construction helped convince engineers ofthe versatility and strength ofiron, and helped usher in the Industrial Revolution era. Darby, however, didn't fare sowell: he severely underestimated the cost tobuild the bridge, and remained indebt for the rest ofhis life. (Source ) 6.
