莲花味精的主要原料就是小麦，而项城本地的小麦因为很多原因，都被销往外地，这样以来，无论是物流成本，还是人工成本，除去国家的限价政策，最终的风险大部份又被转嫁到了农户头上。
包括最近两年，菜价不断上涨，而农民却没有增收。中间环节流通也是一个很重要的因素，本地的小麦能不能被本地的小麦加工企业消化呢，对此，清华大学当代中国研究中心秘书长马炅东、原莲花集团董事长李怀清同志，五洲丰种植专业合作社总经理田喜华，项城天翔农业开发李天祥、金达农牧专业合作社刘喜彬社长曾在北京清华大学和诸多学者一起讨论这个问题。当时提出了要以增产、增质、增值为目标来搞试点。
在试点落地过程中，比较突出的几个问题就是，受传统观念的影响，土地个人财产观念非常突出。承包过程中，难以连片，大型农业机械无法高效率作业。个别农户思想不够解放。
在承包管理中，受小农意识的影响，有个别农户故意刁难，顺手牵羊的习惯。合同履行意识差，容易反复毁约。而农户毁约后，承包方又无可奈何，法律体系不适合农村实际情况，损失只有承包方承担。粮食产量提高过慢
在粮食安全这一方面，大量农药化肥的使用和滥用还相当普遍，在加上农资市场的混乱，很多国家禁用农药，以及各种除草剂的使用，使土地资源恶化。这就造成了粮食质量下降。
在提高粮食附加值方面，由于没有定单和任务，很多粮食都是由商贩来到田间地头收购，价格相对较低，而小商贩为了个人利益，又会在粮食中添加各种承重物，来到达个人利益目的。而最终造成的结果是，流通环节增加，国家资源浪费，社会道德缺失。
