哥特音乐追求的是黑暗和死亡美学，这种与经典哲学观念格格不入的理念使得它久久徘徊于主流文化和严肃艺术的大门之外。哥特音乐惯用的表现手法是：男声主唱极尽压抑与爆发之所能，把暗夜里的绝望挣扎表达的淋漓尽致；背景中圣咏式的女声往往带有浓厚的悲天悯人的气质，而器乐则是黑夜中呜咽的风声、月影里的狼嚎和鲜血滴落在泥土里的声音。哥特音乐还有另外一个特质，那就是它所崇尚的死亡美学。它把悲剧看成是灿烂辉煌的，一种“形而上的安慰的艺术”。为了阐述“悲剧性”的实质，叔本华和尼采都转向了音乐。由此可见，哥特音乐作为一种 “形而上的绝望”的载体来表现死亡美学，有其必然性。 哥特音乐的死亡美学不仅表现在音乐风格上，也体现在其视觉效果和行为艺术上。惨白的面孔，夸张的五官，麻木的表情，凌乱的长发，复古的着装和冰冷的金属装饰，这些都已是哥特族的经典特征。表现在现代都市中，便又是主流社团追逐的一种形式化的标新立异。真正的哥特族总会有一双迷人的大眼睛，眼神中总是透露出说不清道不明的沉郁压抑与自我毁灭。哥特音乐不单是一种音乐型态，和所有的艺术形态一样它更是一种生活态度，哥特是一个可以让人逃离现实而进入的幻想世界，一个黑暗而浪漫的世界。
