In model predictive control an optimal input signal over a certain future horizon is calculated on-line, while in system identi fi cation an optimal model is required. In both optimization problems it is important to choose the degrees of freedom wisely. The choice of the degrees of freedom is denoted with parametrization, . input parametrization in predictive control and model parametrization in identi fic ation. For quadratic cost functions, which mon in both areas, and a linear parametrization the optimization problems are convex: a quadratic programming problem for predictive control and a linear least squares problem for identi fi cation. There isa wide variety of linear parametrizations that can be utilized. In this thesis it is investigate to what extend flexibility in the linear parametrization can contribute to the improvement of model predictive control and system identi fi cation techniques.
