Gothic(哥特式)
Gothic was first to be used to distinguish (区分) the artistic style of the middle ages during the Renaissance(文艺复兴时期). Most of the time, it always relates to terror, death, decadence(颓废), witchcraft(巫术), castles, the dark night and the vampire.
Gothic style uses darkness, fear and loneliness to describe the struggle between love and despair.
1. The origin
Gothic originally refers to the Goths (哥特人).
In the 15th century, the Italians had the thought of prospering the ancient Roman culture and than the renaissance(文艺复兴运动) happened. Due to the Italians hardly forget the history that the Goths destroyed roman empire, they called the time’s art style gothic.

Gothic architecture is the mon cathedral(主教座堂), monasteries (大修道院)and churches in European. Its whole style is tall and lean and the most obvious architectural style is the towering spires and the huge colorful glass painting on the window.
3. The gothic literature
The novel is full of terror and mystery.
The story often occurs in the ancient times and out of the way. The protagonists are trapped in the narrow space and haunted buildings. Suspense(悬疑) and love are intertwined(交织).
The story is often about the secret life, the lost will, the secret of the family and so on. And the ending is the suspense is unraveled(解决) and the hero and the heroine love each other without obstruction.
