Immediately essful, it won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has e a classic of modern American literature. Though Lee had only published this single book, in 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature. Harper Lee To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the American life during the Depression, showing the life in a small town in South America through the visual angle of two children, Jem and Scout. It tells a story of a young girl named Scout and her father, Atticus Finch, a lawyer. He defends a black man wrongfully accused of raping a white woman. In the end, an all-white jury sentences Tom Robinson to death. Themes and Fear White prejudice against a black man make people decide he’s guilty despite lack of evidence. The children have a fear of Boo Radley and judge him to be a “monster”, but are wrong. 2. Moral Courage during opposition – the lawyer, Atticus, defends a black man, which makes some people hate Atticus.
